An interesting subject that has come up with society is privacy. There are many people that don't want privacy and some that do want privacy. A part of why this subject has come up is because of the showing of lives on the Internet, TV, and movies. Jennifer Ringley, the writer of Why I Star in My Own Truman Show, has her own web site exhibiting her life day-by-day. She states, "I enjoy my privacy. I just like to enjoy it with you." With her stating that, she also makes it clear that she's also not an exhibitionist. Maybe she doesn't want fame. The writer of Look at Me! Leave Me Alone! , Joshua Gamson, argues that Americas standpoint of privacy is that we have desires to watch others, to be watched, and to be free from being watched. Jennifer L. Felten, writer of My Taxicab Confession, supports Gamson's view of privacy. Her essay tells her tell all story of her encounter with HBO's documentary series Taxicab Confessions. Sometimes shows like Real World or Road Rules are subject to be critiqued to whether it's really real. Gamson states, "There are more than enough people willing to invade their own "privacy," and more than enough people willing to watch." According to Gamson's studies, "the Los Angeles Times shows that about 14,000 people volunteered to be subjects for the most recent Real World and Road Rules casts," backing up his statement. Ringley states that people you see on TV and in movies are usually actors. She says, "They're fictional which is why their lives seem more exciting than yours does." With Gamson's argument that people like to "watch," Ringley states, "we really are fascinated by how other people live." She believes that people like her web site because she's real and it makes people think that they are normal too. Reality is what people look for when they watch TV shows about people's lives.
