Possibly without the pressures of social expectations, Heathcliff and Catherine could have married. As a child, Catherine is punished for disregarded Heathcliff's social standards and rejecting the chains of traditional values. If Catherine had realized earlier that Edgar's riches and social rank were not going to satisfy as her, she could have been united with Heathcliff. "Cathy is the kind of self that belongs to the Heights and not the Grange so that she is not really filtered to know or share or do justice to the kind of love that the Grange can offer." (Kinhead pg 87)

When the Heathcliff is exposed to Catherine's remarks as to his social status, he runs away. This causes the beginning of his revenge, and his deliberate attempts to bring down and degrade both families as he himself has been degraded. Heathcliff becomes aware that to win Catherine's love again he must become a social elite.
