Money Talks

In today's society athletes are admired so much that people sometimes forget that they too are human. They eat just like everyone else, they sleep just like everyone else, and they get punished for breaking the law just like everyone else, or do they? Mike Tyson, Leon Smith, and Dennis Rodman are three professional athletes, all very much in the public's eye, and they have all broken the law, but since they are all making a considerable amount of money for many key people in sports, they have all been given punishments that do not fit their crimes.

Mike Tyson has a laundry list of atrocious acts that he has committed during his professional career. The first reported on the list was in 1992, when he was accused of raping 18-year old Miss Black America contestant Desiree Washington in Indianapolis. He was then found guilty by a jury and sentenced to serve time in prison. After serving only three of his six year sentence, Tyson was released and came back into the boxing ring. Just two years later, in 1997, during a Wo

Also a problem child in the NBA is Dennis Rodman, whose situation is similar to that of Leon Smith's. With millions of dollars worth of lawsuits against him and numerous arrests, Dennis Rodman is one of the world's most controversial athletes ever. One of Rodman's most well known acts was in 1997, when he kicked a cameraman in the groan during a Chicago Bulls vs. Minnesota Timber Wolves game. Rodman settled with the cameraman outside of court for around 200,000 dollars, and he was suspended for eleven games and fined 25,000 dollars by the NBA. Another Rodman incident was when he was arrested in Newport Beach for disorderly conduct on August 21st, 1999. Rodman was only placed behind bars for a few hours before he was released. Finally, Rodman was fined two thousand dollars after pleading guilty to drunk driving charges on December 22nd, 1999. The NBA took no action against him for either of the offenses, on August 21st or December 22nd.
