In literature, stories would most likely have a theme that revolves around friendship. Most people view their friends as a part of daily life. The giving, the taking, the trust, and the mutual understanding grows over the years. In David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, the main character, David, establishes many friendships as he grows up. He has the most beautiful and mutual friendship with Agnes Wickfield, while also having a one-sided friendship with Steerforth.

>From the first time David lays his eyes on Agnes, he sees a quiet, good, and calm spirit that he has never forgotten. David's friendship with Agnes flowers during his schooling days and his stay at her home. He grows to love her in a brotherly way that exceeds anything that the wicked Uriah Heep can give her. David and Agnes have so much trust in each other that Agnes tells him all her worries and problems about her father. The theme of friendship is essential for any novel. The friendship between David and Agnes is a give and take relationship that the other does not take advantage of, but enables the other to see the real person inside that makes them act like their true selves. It is what makes a friendship last forever. On the other hand, the one-sided friendship with Steerforth will end eventually.

An example about their deep understanding occurs when Uriah asks Mr. Wickfield about Agnes' hand-in-marriage and Mr. Wickfield has a hysterical fit. When Agnes comes in to bring her father upstairs, her eyes meets David's for an instant, yet he sees how much she knows of what goes on.
