The War Over Abortion
One of the most debated topics in the history of American politics is the issue of abortion. There are many issues that are brought forth when arguing over the topic of abortion. In 1973, there was a Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade that ruled that abortion was to be legalized. There have been many controversies over whether this ruling was moral and ethical. This brings up many questions that need to be answered. I feel that there are two major questions that need to be answered. Whether abortion should be legal and if so, under what circumstances? The number one argument against abortion that pro-life supporters agree with is that they consider the unborn fetus a human being. This is the main opposition of the Roe vs. Wade decision. It states in 21 Debated Issues in American Politics that the majority of the people that disagree with the decision of Roe vs. Wade is that people believe that it is more unconstitutional to kill and unborn child then it is to protect the rights of a female. Pro-life followers believe that the life of an unborn child is more important than a woman's right to choose what she wants to do with her body. They feel that they are the experts and that they know what is
Another pro-life view is that the reason why women get abortions is that they feel that they cannot take care of it the way it should be taken care of. Many of times, these unwanted children that are born, are often the victims of child abuse. This is not the case, according to pro-life advocates. "There is no correlation between unplanned pregnancies and the subsequent abuse of the children - in fact, it is most often the wanted children who are abused. (Gargaro, internet)" It is has been proven that there has been a significant rise in child abuse. It has increased by 500% since the ruling of Roe vs. Wade. Seventies claim a proud history of standing up for ------------------------------------------------------------------------ right for the female. Carolyn Gargaro writes on her website "Right away, some will say that abortion is not a matter of life and death, arguing that a fetus is not a "person", or a "human being"" This is the views that many pro-life advocates take. I would have to disagree with this. Yes it is one thing to murder someone in cold blood. I do not feel that abortion is murder. It should be left up to the decision of the female. To say that the fetus has no choice if the female decides she wants an abortion, in my opinion is being closed minded? At the time that the abortion would be performed, the fetus has no control over what happens. It can't even think for itself. There is no point saying that an unborn fetus is a human being. When the abortion would be performed, the fetus most likely hasn't even taken on the characteristics that would be considered human looking. I do agree that if the fetus were left untouched that it would become a human being, but at the time of abortion, how can you say that it is a human being. definition of the community for whom we pledge are opposed to abortion for religious or moral reasons civil law on everyone.
