A Traumatic Event

To my Friend...May God rest your soul!

Just three days ago...I saw your face, your smile, heard you speak. I had looked upon your face so many times before, but it had looked so different from this lifeless object with its unseeing eyes and unsmiling lips. As I stand here...at this moment...I see you not in death but in life. I am unable at this time to visualize my life without you; I can only remember how happy it had been with you.

Just three days ago you arrived at my home. You were as excited as a five-year-old kid with a new toy. You had just landed the job that you had waited so many years for, so you wanted to celebrate. We left for the club shortly after 11:00 PM. We had plenty of time, yet still you sped. You were always speeding...I hated it. I asked you to slow down, but with your usual carefree laughter and a roll of your eyes, you went faster. We got to the club and were havin


Just two days ago you awoke at my house. At the first flicker of your eyelids, a smile creased your lovely face. You were always smiling...I loved your smile. You wanted to go to the beach, so we did. On our way there you sped. I tried talking to you about the dangers of going so fast, but when you turned up the volume on the radio and didn't slow down, I knew you weren't listening. We had a great time at the beach that day. We always had a great time together. I asked to drive home but you wouldn't let me. When the speedometer showed 80 in a 40-mph zone I asked you to be careful. You smiled "we have the rest of our lives to be careful", you said. You dropped me home and left.

Just yesterday you came to pick me up. You just wanted to go for a drive. Once again I asked you to let me drive, but you refused. Without a specific destination in mind, you sped. You were not wearing your seatbelt b
