4) While the Egyptians were building the great pyramids around 2500 BC, people in the northwestern part of India were laying bricks to build India’s first cities. There were many beautiful and organized cities in this region, also known as the Indus valley, but one of the biggest and popular cities was the Harappa. If I were a citizen of Harappa, I would be living in city with streets running North-South and East-West like a grid. The houses would be built with bricks of similar size (just like the Egyptian Pyramids were built) in a carefully planned city. My everyday life would be calm and simple. I would be a farmer producing rice, wheat, barley etc. I may be also trading spices with Persia and diamonds with Rome. In this process of trade, if I wanted to send my boats to the Arabian Sea by water, I would have to travel about six hundred miles on the Indus River. As the Indus River flows towards the Arabian Sea, traveling to the sea would be a breeze. This is just one of the advantages of the location of the Harappa.
