annunciation
The work came to the Uffizi in 1867 from the monastery of San Bartolomeo of Monteoliveto, near Florence. It was ascribed to Domenico Ghirlandaio until 1869, when some critics recognised it as a youthful work by Leonardo, executed around 1472-1475, when he was still an apprentice in the workshop of his master, Andrea del Verrocchio. The sacred scene is set in the garden of a Florentine palace; with a landscape on the background which is already peculiarly influenced by Leonardo, for the magic and unreal atmosphere created by mountains, water and sky. Leonardo's personality is pointed out also in the beautiful drapery of the Virgin and the Angel, while the marble table in front of her probably quotes the tomb of Piero and Giovanni dei Medici in the church of San Lorenzo sculpted by Verrocchio in this period. This much discussed painting was originally attributed to Ghirlandaio, but a group of influential nineteenth century scholars recognised the hand of the young Da Vinci, on the basis of some newly discovered preparatory sketches of the two figures. As for interpretation, the relatively large distance that sepa
The Heavenly Father, surrounded by a host of angels, entrusts the Archangel Gabriel with the mission of informing Mary that she will bear the Son of God. The figure of God the Father is painted on a wooden panel. The left side of the fresco has been damaged by water and some of the angels have disappeared. The Angel of the Annunciation informs Mary that she will bear the Son of God. The hand of the angel carefully but unobtrusively indicates the direction in which the story will flow. Both the angel and Mary are framed in identical architectural structures, but with the perspective projecting toward the centre. The Virgin of the Annunciation. Mary traditionally holds a book and Giotto portrays her crossing her arms as she receives the message from the angel, He uses the main departures of the Annunciation 1) Lillie's, 2) Angel Gabriel, 3) Virgin Mary, 4) Holy Spirit. But there are also different features within his painting that symbolise different things. For example in JVE rendition, behind the virgin stands three gothic arches symbolizing TRINITY. On the floor there are also depictions of the Old Testament and Zodiac signs (JVE uses the color red to get the attention of the viewer, this color seemingly attracts the viewer). The virgin is dressed in blue. The angel has rainbow colored wings and a rich red and gold robe. Mary's words are upside down, not meant for the viewer but for GOD. There is also a calendar on the floor and the virgin is kneeling on the month of March (which is about the time of the annunciation). There is also disguised symbolism in the architectual forms, ROMANESQUE above where OLD TESTAMENT scenes of Moses appear in the upper zone, and GOTHIC below, where incarnation of new Moses is shown at the lowest po! int. As we look at the Annunciation, we become warmly conscious of the gentle radiance of the light, ill
