"America's Devil's Island," was the quote given to Alcatraz because of its similarities to the famous Devil's Island prison of France. In the making of Alcatraz, the Federal Bureau of Prisons decided to take the small island in the San Francisco Bay and make the military fort and jail into a brand new prison. Alcatraz used electric gates and armed guards in and outside of the prison, which made it different from other prisons. In addition, Alcatraz had some of the most dangerous inmates held there. Some of the prisoners were popular such as Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Albert Bates, Harvey Bailey and John Dillinger. Since Alcatraz had such a notorious reputation for keeping prisoners from escaping and it held famous inmates, movie industries made two films based on this penitentiary.
