Band of Brothers

The military is one of the only organizations in the United States that brings men and women together from all over the country and from many different backgrounds to work together as a team with a common goal. In the novel Band of Brothers, this idea was illustrated within Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division of the US Army. The two people that trained and shaped Easy Company were the Company's Commanding Officer, First Lieutenant Herbert Sobel and Second Lieutenant Dick Winters. Sobel instilled the men with the discipline and mental strength that would be necessary to survive the combat of World War II. Winters taught the men a different lesson, the mental intelligence and combat awareness necessary to defeat the Germans.

Easy Company started of at Camp Toccoa, where they earned their jump wings. They moved on to Forts Benning, Mackall, Bragg, and Shanks. After this training the Company left the United States and headed for Aldbourne, England where they took part in more extensive training. In Aldbourne the Company began to tighten up and close friendships formed while the men took in the sights of England. Shortly after arriving in Aldbourne, Easy Company started training with the 82nd Ai

Their next mission was artillery support on a flat plan that was cut off by dikes, known as the Island. No jumps were involved; this was a trench warfare battle. The men remained at the Island from October until late November. In Mourmelon-Le-Grand, the men rested for a few weeks after the stressful time spent on the Island. Many of the men hoped to stay in Mourmelon-Le-Grand until after Christmas, but their stay was cut short. The Germans launched the largest counterattack of the war and the men of the 506th were thrown into combat with inadequate supplies or replacements. They headed into the Battle of the Bulge. The mission of the 506th was too defend Bastogne. The men fought here from 19 December to 13 January. They fought in the cold winter without proper clothing and with little warmth. The entire time they went without a single hot meal. Even with the harsh fighting conditions the 506th managed to push the Germans back into Noville. On 14 January the 2d Battalion of Easy Company lead the attack into Noville. On the front lines they were relieved by the 101st. Again they suffered tremendous loss. They had headed into Belgium with 121 men and were returning with only 63. The 506th was put back into reserve for nearly two weeks in Alsace.
