Money, power and respect as they say, are the key to life. In the book "Middle Passage," it not only talks of the hardship of slaves, but also the corruption of people. John Locke believed that people were not born corrupt, but instead the society that made them that way. People become corrupt because of a variety of reasons: wealth, greed, jealousy, power, respect, and so much more. Some people will risk anything, their friendship, love, and family, to either gain power and respect or to keep it. Throughout history, people have abused the powers that they obtain, like when there were kings and monarchs. They used these powers to hurt their subjects, and as they bring pleasure to themselves only, they become brutal and violent and flaunt their powers to gain more. Once power is gained it is intuition to want to have more, but if people can see what trouble and pain they can cause in doing so, people will change and maybe, just maybe we'll be a little closer to a perfec! Isadora tries to tame Rutherford of his wild life and helps him pay off his debts through Papa Zeringue, who is a sort of underground mafia-like man who controls most of the city. The catch to getting off his debt was to marry Isadora. Thinking long and hard, Rutherford flees in fear of Papa and is stubborn about changing his habits.
