Divorce

Divorces are as common as marriages themselves. Couples marry and when something goes wrong in their relationship they divorce. Divorce is now a popular solution to problems that many couples have. In the past several years, the divorce rate has skyrocketed to a record high of almost fifty percent. It is also believed that the divorce rate is higher in the United States than in any other country in the world. Although divorce is not always the answer, it is sometimes necessary for many situations. This raises the question of why divorce is more common today than it was in the past. Some reasons for seeking a divorce include infidelity, domestic violence, and a lack of communication, among others, which I will be discussing in the following paragraphs.

In the past, when a couple divorced, there had to be a good reason for it. The main reason happened to be infidelity. Often, in the past, the adulterous affairs that occurred were between a man and a woman and we refer to this type of relationship as a heterosexual relationship. This kind of affair is still popular today, but more and more we see marriages ending because one partner, or in

thout a lot of necessities. The day that I knew that it had to end was the day that my three year old daughter brought me a bag of cocaine and said to me, "Mama, what is this?". My heart dropped to my stomach and I knew then that I had to end our marriage. A marriage more than likely cannot function and be a successful marriage when drugs and alcohol are involved.

A few decades back, it was known that a man would work and support his family while the wife stayed at home and took care of the house, children and her husband. Presently, the roles of husbands and wives have changed dramatically. Women are now often seen in the professional field more than ever before. Men still remain the chief provider of the family but because of the involvement of their wives in the professional field, their relationship has also began to drift apart. For example, a family member of mine found a great job that paid more than her husband's job. Although it helped them financially, it caused her husband to feel inadequate because he was not the chief provider anymore; consequently this caused them a great deal of problems and problems like these can sometimes end in divorce.

Domestic violence has also become a very clear indication of a failed marriage. I have a friend that experienced domestic violence. The abuse started out petty and had gotten considerably worse whereas she finally ended up in the hospital emergency room and had staples put into her head. She stayed with him on the promise that he would never hurt her again, however that was a lie because he ended up in jail and she finally filed for divorce. Women and men who suffer physical abuse do not on
