Frankenstein: Lust, Love, and Sin
Kenneth Branagh bases the film Frankenstein on the 18th century gothic novel by Mary Shelly. The film is set in the late 17th century in Geneva. Victor Frankenstein, the films main character, is an aspiring doctor, who becomes obsessed with preserving life after his mother’s death. The death of his mother is the turning point of the film. It is Victor's rage within grief that spurs him in his research. Elizabeth, an orphan, is taken in by the Frankenstein family and becomes Victor’s love interest. Elizabeth and Frankenstein are considered brother and sister, but only by name. Frankenstein leaves to become a student in the medical field. Here he engulfs himself in his own ideas of medical science, rather than those being taught. Victor feels that no human should have to die. By doing this, he becomes completely obsessed with his project. He fears no consequences, but believes this kind of research will benefit mankind.
