Marriage & Divorce
In our lives we are faced with many decisions. In some decisions we are given specific commandments to follow when making them. Marriage is one of the decisions. Perhaps one of the most important decisions we will make is choosing the person we will spend the rest of our lives with. This is not a decision that should be taken lightly. As Christians, we have certain things we should take into consideration when making that decision. God has given specific commands to both the husband and wife regarding how they are to treat each other and their roles in the marriage relationship. Today's society has paid no attention to the roles of the husband and wife, but we, as Christians, have the Bible to refer to when we are confused as to what part we play in our marriage. God has specifically said that the husband is to be the head of the household. The man is the head over his wife, just as Christ was head over the church (Ephesians 5:23). This does not mean that the husband is to com!mand his wife to do unrealistic things. He is not to be a tyrant. Christ lorded over the church with compassion, so the husband is to do the same with his wife. Husbands are also to love their wife as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). Christ loved
e and make sure she is not spiritually hungry. He should make sure all of her spiritual needs are met in so far as he can meet them. God not only gave commands to the man regarding marriage, He also gave instruction to the woman. The wife also plays an important role i the marriage relationship. Wives are to be subject to their husbands as they are to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22). Many people today take this out of context and treat it as if the wife is to do all that her husband says, no matter what it may be. The thing most people are forgetting is that the husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church, therefore, he would never ask her to do anything that is unreasonable, or anything she would not want to do willingly. If a husband is treating his wife with the love and respect he is commanded to, she will have no problem doing what he asks of her. A woman is also to respect her husband (Ephesians 5:33). This too should not be an unbearable commandment. If a husband is treating his wife with the respect that Christ gave the church, her respect for him should come naturally. Both husband and wife ar! the church unconditionally, therefore, a man should love his wife in the same way. No matter what hardships may come, the man is to stay by his wife and love her with all of his heart, just as Christ did with the church. A husband is also to give of himself all he can to his wife (Ephesians 5:25-27). He is to do all he can to make sure she is a fitting wife and a woman of the Lord. He is to treat her just like Christ treated the church. A husband is also to love his wife as his own body (Ephesians 5:28). One cannot love someone unless he loves himself first. A man does not hate himself and cause harm to his body, he nourishes it (Ephesians 5:28). Therefore, he should do the same with his wife. A husband should nourish his wif! After marriage, both partners are to admonish one another and build u the other's Christian character with devotions, as well as other manners of worship (Colossians 3:16). Devotions are very important to the life of a Christian, and just because one has gotten married, he should not neglect his duty to worship the Lord. Devotions should be both a personal and shared thing. A husband or wife should take personal time to be alone with the Lord where they can grow in their personal relationship with Him. There should also be times where the husband and wife come together to worship God. They should take this time to make sure that they are where they are supposed to be in their marriage relationship, and they should make sure that the Lord is still the head of their marriage. Devotions should not only be a time where husband and wife grow closer to God, but a time where they grow closer to one another. Marriage
