"Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience, above all liberties." These words were written 350 years ago by famous 17th writer John Milton in his 1644 book Areopagitica, in which he spoke out against censorship. Milton’s battle against censorship did not end in 1644 however. Freedom of speech and expression is an issue that has been very controversial throughout history. For centuries, the freedom to say whatever you want has been banned and strictly enforced, mainly to keep revolutionaries from speaking out against government corruption. The people fought back however and won their right to voice their beliefs. Today, in the 21st century, these fundamental rights are again in question. The government’s of the United States and Canada have sprung up much debate over issues involving censorship and freedom of speech. These issues include music and the internet.
