The roaring twenties...wealthy gangsters, Rolls Royces, jazz bands; a guilded happiness. The American dream is the basis on what America was founded. (insert paper quote) According to this dream, you can start with nothing, work hard, and have everything in the end. The whole idea of social mobility is somewhat unheard-of in many other countries, thus making America the great country that it is. This dream has many interpretations, but all of them come to one conclusion; wealth, security, and happiness. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the American dream is shown to be both up and down. The up side is the wealth and material posessions you acquire, and the downside is the way you sometimes have to conduct your business.
Although Gatsby is the ideal example of one chasing the dream, there are others in this book as well. For example, Tom. He is one who you would also associate with the American dream because of his immense wealth. He is also associated this way because he seems to have everything under control in his love life with daisy. We later find that he is actually unhappy or dissatisfied with her because he is running around with other women. This is just one of many examples of the guilded happiness of this book.
