Daniel Webster

A detailed Summary of Daniel Webster

The book that I read was entitled Daniel Webster and the Rise of the National

Conservation. It was written by Richard N. Current and was published in the year of

Daniel Webster was brought into this world on the 18th day of January in the year 1782 in the valley of the Merrimack, near the middle of New Hampshire. He was son of a farmer and never really lacked attention while he was growing up. Webster demonstrated startling powers of assimilation and retention even as a child. He received the best of his early education from newspapers, his mother's bible, political gossip throughout the town and listening to his father's fascinating tales of great men and their battles. Webster graduated from Dartmouth college in 1801 and shortly after, in 1807 he opened a legal practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire after a legal apprenticeship.

Daniel was a leading lawyer, a wonderful orator, a father, husband, and statesmen. In 1812 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives due to his opposition to the war of 1812. In the year of 1816, Webster left the congress and moved to Boston with his wife and two children to the growing New England metropolis. Soon after his move he was earning about 20,000 dollars

Personally, I think that Current keeps the book very balanced. He talks about Webster being against tarrifs and for some other tarrifs. The compromise of 1850 is a good example, because Current showed how Webster worked with that. Current also pointed out things like Webster borrowing large sums of money from the bank and friends when he really had plenty and even showed how Webster could be arrogant at times. Even though he mentioned all of these things, Current educated us with many beneficial things that Webster did or was involved with.

Daniel Webster faced a lot of personal problems throughout his life as well. Webster had four kids and two of them died at young ages. Webster borrowed huge amounts of money from a numerous people when he was in debt and usually did not pay them back. Daniel Webster was also an alcoholic.

Daniel Webster had one quality that comes to my mind when I think of something that hindered his career, but at times this characteristic could have helped him. The quality that comes to mind is arrogance. This hindered him when he was running for presidential office because he wanted so badly to be the president, yet he did not see a need in being any ones friend. This quality could have helped Webster by making him come off to people like he had wonderful self confidence and that he was ver sure of himself. I personally think that it hurt Webster a lot more than it benefited him.

To me the author seems sympathetic to Daniel Webster. This is a biography of Daniel Webster, therefor the author should know almost everything about Webster. For some reason I picked up more good things that the author than shared bad things. This may have something to do with Current liking Daniel Webster as a person, what he stood for, and his beliefs.
