Affirmative Action - "Reverse Racism?" Affirmative action is a comprised plan created by local and state governments to "fight fire with fire." It is supposed to stop discrimination against the blacks, but at the same time is just another step back towards discrimination against the white majority. In other words, it is a plan to help minorities in getting the same privileges as the majority, mainly focused on blacks and whites. "Reverse discrimination" through affirmative action is unfair to the majority in public school admissions when it is supposed to help society. Since the 1960's, a program called affirmative action was enacted in a few public high schools and universities throughout the states, mainly in California and Texas. It has caused a major controversy, in the fact that it uses a racial preference among admissions to these schools. Detroit Free Press Wilma Peebles Wilkins, a member of the African-American community, points out the many flaws of the Affirmative Action program in this article. She believes that policymakers comprised the plan to "thwart discrimination", but it backfired and made race relations worse. Affirmative action has dangerously made practices a failure among inadequately educated individuals given jobs because of race quotas among employers. Studies shown in this article are based on an elite, Lowell High School in San Francisco. The high school had to change their admissions process from a policy, which used race as an equation of allowing students to enter to allowing the economic disadvantaged to have a better chance. The policy came under fire when a majority of Chinese-Americans were angered that they had to test higher then many of the minorities to get into the school, seeing how the school only allowed 40% of any ethnic group. This comes to show, that with any solution to a "complex racial problem", you can never have a satisfactory way of not discriminating against another race.
