John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in the year 1917, in Brookline Massachusetts. In 1946, at the age of 29, Kennedy became a congressman for Massachusetts. When in Congress, Kennedy was known for voting his own ideas, not just those of his party. He openly criticized the actions of the Truman administration. He ran for the senate in 1952. During his first two years as senator he backed legislation beneficial to the Massachusetts textile, fishing, watch, and transportation industries. In 1955, he was the only New England senator to support renewal of the Reciprocal Trade Agreement Act that gave the president the power to lower U.S. tariffs, or taxes on imported goods, in exchange for similar concessions from other countries. One of Kennedy's most novel pieces of legislation was the creation of the Peace Corp. Sending young Americans around the globe to help bring the third world into the modern age. Even though he surrounded himself with wealthy, sometimes Republican advisors, Kennedy was a devout liberal who thought the government should step in and help the poor. Of course he wasn't afraid to spend money. He persuaded congress to approve over one billion dollars to send a man to the moon. The complex used to launch those men to the moon still bears his name today, the Kennedy Space Center.
