In this chapter, Holden is in a hospital from a mental breakdown, and is telling about his past. He was talking about when he was going to Pencey Prep. He had recently found out that he had flunked four out his five classes, then he visited his old Social Studies teacher. After he and his teacher had been talking for a while, his teacher said to him, "Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules." Pg. 8 If Holden doesn't follow the rules he will get in trouble or not be successful in life. Holden gets annoyed by Ackley and his disgusting hygiene. His roommate, Stradlater, comes in and tells him that he has a date, but wants to shave first. It turns out that Stradlater is going out with a girl that Holden has a crush on. He is afraid that something bad might happen. Holden had a younger brother who died. He loved him and misses him very much. In thinking about this he thinks, "People never believe you." Pg. 37. In this chapter, Holden has gone to a rest home, where he may get help to think about his past and future. Are out somewhere and he goes in to watch Phoebe while she sleeps. Noticing some of her papers, he begins to read them. "I can read that kind of stuff, some kids' notebook, all day and all night long." Pg. 161 . This seems as though it is helping him to think and act like a child again. Where he leaves. Luce, being three years older, seems to have grown and matured while Holden has not.
