In this chapter, Holden is in a hospital from a mental breakdown, and is telling about his past. He was talking about when he was going to Pencey Prep. He had recently found out that he had flunked four out his five classes, then he visited his old Social Studies teacher. After he and his teacher had been talking for a while, his teacher said to him, “Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules.” Pg. 8 If Holden doesn’t follow the rules he will get in trouble or not be successful in life. Holden gets annoyed by Ackley and his disgusting hygiene. His roommate, Stradlater, comes in and tells him that he has a date, but wants to shave first. It turns out that Stradlater is going out with a girl that Holden has a crush on. He is afraid that something bad might happen. Holden had a younger brother who died.
