In Nathanial Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, the sin of adultery committed by Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne is seen by society to be very wrong. Placing great punishment on Hester Prynne causing her to wear a scarlet letter "A" representing adultery. Arthur Dimmesdale receiving only the punishment of his own guilt, for he could not reveal he was the other accompanied in the sin. Unlike society, nature was a place that paid no attention to sin; in fact it was a place of sin itself. Pearl, the black man, and Roger, bringing sin into the town from the forest, are example to the sin in the forest which symbolizes nature. In The Scarlet Letter, Pearl is connected to nature. At one point in the book, Pearl throws pebbles and one of them hits a gray bird and it, " fluttered away with a broken wing" (160). Then it is said, " It grieved her to have done harm to a little being that was as wild as the sea breeze, or as wild as Pearl herself " (160). This quotation is saying that Pearl is like a wild bird in nature. In The Scarlet Letter it is clear that nature is a place of sin. If nature is a place of sin, it must not pay any attention to sin. Nature does not make rules against sin, because it does not know right from wrong, and does not know the wrong in it. Overall, nature in turn cannot pay attention to sin, for it does not know the reasoning in it. Unlike nature, society will have punishment from sin, because it does know right from wrong, and will try to make things right. The black man is actually the devil who lives in the forest. Pearl then later says Mistress Hibbins says that the scarlet letter, the mark of sin, is the mark of the black man. The black man living in the forest and putting the mark of sin onto women shows that sin is part to nature. In chapter 20, Dimmesdale and Hester see each other in the forest. When Arthur leaves the forest, it seems he has come out with unusual sinful thoughts. Arthur comes out with three temptations that are: to utter blasphemous suggestions, deny the immortality of the soul, and to teach wicked words to a group of puritan children.
