Growth in Alice in Wonderland
"Alice: The Naive Girl Turned Educated Woman... Next, On Jerry Springer"The entire novel Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, revolves centrally around Alice's growth through the reception of knowledge. Analyzing these references of comprehension allows the reader to gain an understanding of how indirectly gaining outside education and know-how will prove positive in an enclosed society. Through Alice's encountering with the mouse and caterpillar, she becomes better equipped to succeed in her ultimate test of knowledge, the courtroom. Alice displays her naivety and shows what an undereducated and uncompassionate lass she amounts to, with her experience with the mouse as she swam in her tears. Before she had a true interaction with the mouse, Alice said, "I daresay it's a French mouse, come over with William the Conqueror" (13). Since the mouse would not respond to Alice at first, she thought it foreign; she tried to put the knowledge she has to work, but it simply proved to amount to less then assumed from the quote. Seeing how impossible it could have been for the mouse to have ventured over with William the Conqueror, since his time had passed many hundred year prior, the author made a prime example of demonstrating Alic
After more interaction with unique characters, Alice begins to slightly expand her mind; yet she still has a few set backs involving her lack of knowledge in her meeting with the Caterpillar. When speaking to the Caterpillar, Alice said, "I can't remember things as I used- and I don't keep the same size for ten minutes together" (33). Alice keeps blaming her failure of remembering simple concepts on the occurrences of her changing size many times; but it has nothing to do with her size that causes her to forget, but actually her abrupt loss of innocence owns the blame. This demonstrates that although her logic comes out wrong, she still puts forth an attempt to label and add an explication to what happens; thus showing that her mind has begun to slightly open out. The passage, "Alice remained looking thoughtfully at the mushroom for a minute, trying to make out which were the two sides of it; and, as it was perfectly round, she found this a very difficult question. However, at last she stretched her arms round it as far as they would go, and broke off a bit of the edge with each hand," (36) renders it's self significant in Alice's knowledge and understanding. Alice has begun to learn; she put logics to work when trying to figure out the puzzle of two sides of the mushroom and ended up successful.
