cold war
The Cold War was a scary time for the world. There was always a threat of nuclear war. The Cold War took place from 1945 to 1991. It started immediately after World War II ended. The Cold War was all about the U.S. competing with the Soviet Union over which form of government was better; the U.S.'s Democracy or the U.S.S.R.'s totalitarian government. It was finally put to an end in 1991 when the Soviet Union broke up into several smaller countries. In 1945 the Yalta Conference took place. There were 3 leaders on the altar at this conference: Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. In this conference, Stalin promised free elections at the end of World War II in Eastern Europe. Stalin then broke this promise, and proceeded to force communism on them. The U.S. felt threatened by the spread of communism. George Caitlin Marshall, secretary of state for Harry Truman, made up a containment policy to help stop Communism from spreading. It was named the "Marshall Plan." The Marshall Plan would give poor countries in Western Europe financial help so they would not resort to communism as a solution to their problems. The U.S. gave about $13 billion dollars for Europeans to re
The Korean War (1950-1953) was a war which the U.S. got involved in to defend a Democratic country against a communist power. The United States would not try to stamp out communism where it already existed, or in any country that freely chose communism (Mazour p. 758). North Korea attempted to force communism onto South Korea. Korea was divided at the 38th parallel. The U.S. army and South Korea took on North Korea and China. This ended in 1953 when a truce was made which kept North and South Korea divided. In 1956, the Hungarian Revolution took place. The Hungarian government began to pass laws that allowed them to have more freedom. Since Russia still had control over them, they would not let this happen. Hungary had hoped for the United States to step in, but the U.S. could not afford to involve themselves. These 44 years of the Cold War could have easily been avoided. Communism did not turn out to be the big threat that we had made it out to be. The Soviet Union was not nearly as powerful as we had feared. Although we avoided nuclear war, we could have avoided the Cold War all together with a little bit of communication. In the future we should remember not to over-react. The Vietnam War (1965-1975) was another war that the United States got involved in to discontinue the spread of communism. North Vietnam, a communist country, attempted to for communism onto South Vietnam, a democratic country. North and South Vietnam were divided at the 19th parallel. In this war the U.S. used Guerilla Warfare, which is a military technique relying on raids by small bands of soldiers. The United States battled the National Liber
