A detailed Summary of History Of Ipswich
Ipswich has a rich and colourful history that aided in shaping Queensland.
Ipswich has a rich and colourful history that has remarkably helped in making Queensland as it is today. Captain Patrick Logan knew that Ipswich would make a perfect settlement in 1826, when he discovered hills of limestone along the banks of the Bremer River. He was excited by his findings and sent an overseer and five convicts to quarry limestone and to erect a lime-burning facility in the following year and proudly announced the settlement to be know as 'Limestone.'
Ipswich was originally a convict settlement from 1827 until 1839 with Captain Logan Commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement. With only a few convicts at the camp, Ipswich mostly supplied lime and burnt in kilns by convicts, then floated down the Bremer River and on to Brisbane to help with the ever-increasing building trade. "I

may safely rely that there is in this beautiful vale at least half-a-million acres excellently watered, and fit for any purpose to which it may be applied."
Since then, changes in the Queensland economy has seriously eroded the traditional mining, industrial and agricultural base, so that Ipswich is now developing in new directions.
Ipswich didn't have a fairy tale story, in 1860 the colony of Queensland was struggling for independence, so too was the fledgling settlement of Ipswich, which gained municipal status. But for the shortage of cotton during the American Civil War, the town might have been grievously retarded, due to droughts, floods and then high unemployment and depression in the later years.
