The role of fate in ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ impacts on the overall tone and level of emotion evidenced in the ending. Fate is where people believe something happens for a reason and that their destiny is planned and everything is inevitable. Others however, believe the future is controlled by a person’s own actions. It is evident that some passages in the prologue are symbols that Romeo and Juliet’s death was fate, “The fearful passage of their death-marked love”, “From forth the fatal lions of these two foes; A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life” . In ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ fate is one of the main themes, described as having power over many events in the play. While fate is blamed as the ultimate cause of the mishaps, the real explanation is rather the loss of self-control. The poor choices, or mishaps, directly contribute to the death of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet, for example, decided that she would take control of her own destiny by taking a potion that rendered her unconscious.
