Cultural Relativism

Cultural Relativism is something I feel everyone should take into consideration. It is very true that different cultures have different moral codes. An idea, concept, or some type of action that one culture partakes on might just be the total opposite to another culture. In either case, it doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong to do what they believe in because their knowledge on these certain situations have been passed down from the earlier people in their lives who believed in the same thing. We really don't have any "set rules" for everything in this world, for everything and anything can mean totally different things to similar or even different people. Now, I'm not saying that one should believe in another's point of view, but just the mere fact that one should respect the actions or reactions one commits to certain situations. I guess you can tell by now that I truly agree with the whole concept of Cultural Relativism. I've been in many situations where I was ashamed to participate in many cultural events because some of my friends might think differently of me. That they don't understand how a single event can mean more to them than they would ever know. So why is it that people don't

ethnocentrism is thoroughly submerged in their minds. So I think that extensive research and or discussions is needed to gain more knowledge on why people act the way they do to certain things. Taking polls is not a bad idea at all. Maybe we can create polls on what people feel about something that certain cultures participate in (i.e. eating human flesh, stealing, celebrating the dead, etc...). Little group discussions can also be made so we can study how people react to the certain situations more in depth. We can find out what it is that prohibits people from accepting something that other people do. Because we must all learn to live together in more ways than one. To totally disrespect one's cultural acts will just drag us away from accomplishing this amazing challenge.

I have grown up in a culture where gay men were considered the "locals" of the place (or even the country for that matter). I grew up in the Philippine Islands in 1983 and have been exposed to many gay people since then. I would definitely say that gay people are treated very differently over there than from here in the United States. Even though people don't admit, some do treat gay men harshly simply because of the way they act. Some people have this vision that men should be strong and manly; not stooping down to any other "inferior" levels below. But in the Philippines, it's the total opposite. Many people treat gay
