Printer James Grand first began in the stationery business in 1882, working out of a single room in a Toronto house, and selling door-to-door from his wheelbarrow. He soon recognized his customers' greater needs for more than just stationery, and a good idea was born.It wasn't long before his early version of an 'office outfitters' business had grown beyond James Grand's solo efforts. He convinced his brother-in-law, Samuel Toy, to join him as 1/3 partner a year later. Together, they opened the first Grand & Toy retail store in Toronto. The wheelbarrows were retired out back. From such humble beginnings 119 years ago, and through a devastating Toronto fire, the Depression and two World Wars, Grand & Toy continued to build their business. By consistently improving their product line, their ordering methods, and meeting the ever-changing needs of a growing clientele, Grand & Toy expanded throughout the balance of the 1800’s and into the 20th century. They were selling more than office supplies even then. They were selling an unwavering dedication to personal service, uncompromising quality and fair pricing.
