Printer James Grand first began in the stationery business in 1882, working out of a single room in a Toronto house, and selling door-to-door from his wheelbarrow. He soon recognized his customers' greater needs for more than just stationery, and a good idea was born.It wasn't long before his early version of an 'office outfitters' business had grown beyond James Grand's solo efforts. He convinced his brother-in-law, Samuel Toy, to join him as 1/3 partner a year later. Together, they opened the first Grand & Toy retail store in Toronto. The wheelbarrows were retired out back. From such humble beginnings 119 years ago, and through a devastating Toronto fire, the Depression and two World Wars, Grand & Toy continued to build their business. By consistently improving their product line, their ordering methods, and meeting the ever-changing needs of a growing clientele, Grand & Toy expanded throughout the balance of the 1800's and into the 20th century.
