Hamlet had the Oedipus complex. Oedipus was a person who was cursed to kill his father and marry his mother. So, the Oedipus complex is when a child lusts after his or her mother. This leads to depression because the child cannot fulfill his or her desire. If Hamlet had the Oedipus complex then we can understand why he did some of the things that he did. He delayed himself in killing Claudius (because he could sympathize with him), he suffered from depression (because he could not be with his mother), and Hamlet finally killed Claudius (his mother had died).
Why did Hamlet take so long to kill Claudius? He had a problem and the only way to fix it was to kill his uncle. A lot of lives would have been saved, including his own, if

Hamlet would have killed him earlier. So, why did he not? Hamlet loved his mother, and there is no possible way he could stand putting her through that much trauma. So, then he delayed the act as much as possible, causing more involvement from other people than desired.
