knicks
Although the New York Knicks were victorious over the New Jersey Nets tonight, it looks as though neither team will be competing for the Championship Ring this year. Neither the Knicks nor the Nets seem to have the team chemistry or the individual talent to be championship contenders. Tonight, however, the Knicks consistent and powerful defense was able to defeat the Nets, who now have lost 8 games in a row. Although the Knicks have an impressive record at 7-3, their competition has generally not been of championship caliber. While the Knicks defense was superior, the Nets shot less than 30 percent from the field, the Knick's offense was so impotent that the Nets were in the game until the final minutes. The Knicks 62 percent free throw shooting also allowed Nets to stay in the game. An ugly win for the Knicks, full of turnovers, poor free-throw shooting, poor offense, but a win none the less. The highlight for the Knicks in tonight's game was the exceptional play of point guard Charlie Ward, the former college football great who left the foot ball fields for the bright lights of Madison Square Garden. Ward scored only 10 points shooting 4-7 but pulled in 9 rebounds and dished out 5 assists. Ward was a key player i
The problem the Knicks are facing is one that has been plaguing them for years, the aging of their key players and their inability produce a consistent and productive offense. Patrick Ewing, who is by far the best player on the Knick's team, has bad knees and is nearing retirement. Larry Johnson, whose potential once touted to be of championship caliber, never attained that potential remaining a good but injury prone player. The Knick's newest acquisition, forward Latrell Spreewell, has proved merely another liability. With his hot temper, a temper which almost got him kicked out of the league for choking his coach last year, his inconsistent shooting and being so prone to injury, Latrell Spreewell is not an asset to the Knicks. Another strike against Spreewell is the fact that since he has been out with a broken ankle, the Knicks have been 7-1. What should the Knicks do now? Should they again try to rebuild, should they work with what they have, should they look for experience? The Knicks seem stuck in a rut. Rumors are circulating about ex-Bull's coach Phil Jackson taking over the Knicks next season. But the Knicks have tried new coachs before and they are without a championship ring. n
