The Australian Government is a constitutional democracy. Based upon the British Westminster system, it stresses the importance of two key concepts, representation and responsibility. Members of Parliament are expected to represent the interests of their electorate and are held responsible to them. But since the evolution of the modern party system whereby most MPs' affiliate themselves with a party, the original political process has been compromised. Here we examine two of such parties, the Liberals and the Australian Greens. The Liberal Party asserts a claim to represent the interests of the individual, families and free enterprise. The Liberal Party has an exemplary record of providing a reformative policy framework and delivering programs targeting mainstream Australians. On the 10th of December 1949, the first Liberal Government was elected to Australia's national parliament. Since then, the Liberal Party has enjoyed political success unrivalled in our country's history and has been in government for 35 years in the last half century. Since first coming to government, the Liberals are credited with achievements in many sectors which have benefited all Australians.

Amongst the foundation principles of the Liberal Party of Australia is a commitment to individual freedom, the provision of choice and competition, the encouragement of personal endeavour and achievement, the promotion of fairness and equity and the facilitation of a cohesive and genuine sense of community. The two key terms that the Liberals state in their policies are Enterprise and Initiative. The Liberal Party stresses they work towards a just and humane society in which the importance of the family and the role of law and justice is maintained. They work to promote equal opportunity for all Australians; and the encouragement and facilitation of wealth so that all may enjoy the highest possible standards of living, health, education and social justice. The Liberal Party believes that our nation has a constructive role to play in maintaining world peace and democracy through alliance with other free nations. Community Services- the availability of a universal health fund covering not only medical and hospital, but including the full range of appropriate health services and also including dental and nursing services. The Liberals and the Greens have not always sided together in Parliament. Many bills put forward by the Liberals have been under the criticism of the Greens due to its possible impacts on the environment but the Greens themselves number so few that they do not pose as a major threat to passing Liberal legislation. Another issue that the parties disagree on is whether Australia should be a republic or constitutional monarchy. The Greens are firm advocates for first while the Liberals are conservative about such matters and
