The Australian Government is a constitutional democracy. Based upon the British Westminster system, it stresses the importance of two key concepts, representation and responsibility. Members of Parliament are expected to represent the interests of their electorate and are held responsible to them. But since the evolution of the modern party system whereby most MPs’ affiliate themselves with a party, the original political process has been compromised. Here we examine two of such parties, the Liberals and the Australian Greens. The Liberal Party asserts a claim to represent the interests of the individual, families and free enterprise. The Liberal Party has an exemplary record of providing a reformative policy framework and delivering programs targeting mainstream Australians. On the 10th of December 1949, the first Liberal Government was elected to Australia’s national parliament. Since then, the Liberal Party has enjoyed political success unrivalled in our country’s history and has been in government for 35 years in the last half century. Since first coming to government, the Liberals are credited with achievements in many sectors which have benefited all Australians.
