Mononucleosis and Herpes
Mononucleosis is an infectious disease found in humans, in which the blood and tissues contain mononuclear leukocytes. These are white blood cells with only one nucleus, either monocytes or lymphocytes. An infectious disease is a disease that can give you an infection, it can be transmitted by infection without actual contact, or can be caused by a microorganism. All species of animals are afflicted with infections caused by a wide variety of organisms, from submicroscopic viruses to wormlike parasites. When a person has an infectious disease like mono the organism gains access to the patients body, survives, and then multiples. Next, the patient gets the symptoms. Then the patient may die or recover spontaneously, or the infection may respond to specific therapy. Often there is an immunity. Infectious diseases have strongly influenced the course of history on Earth. The organisms responsible for human infections are viruses. Viruses are simple life forms consisting of nucleic acid, encoding genetic information, and surface components of protein that enable them to enter cells. Viruses are unable to multiply outside of cells. Mononucleosis is found in DNA, in the body. Mono is
There are some more serious symptoms that may not be visible, such as the enlargement of the spleen and the inflammation of the liver. The enlargement of the spleen may not be detected by the doctor, but it is possible. It may cause a pain in the upper left abdominal located under the chest. If the spleen ruptures, it will require emergency surgery, which means removal. Luckily, the removal of the spleen will not affect the rest of your body it is similar to the removal of your appendix. Many people live a normal healthy life without their spleen. When diagnosed with Mononucleosis, the doctor usually informs you to avoid any sports, except swimming, because if you receive a blow to your spleen, it could rupture, requiring surgery. Enlargement of the spleen occurs in 2 out of every 3 cases and is not uncommon. Signs of a ruptured spleen include; pain in the left upper abdomen, feeling light headed, feeling like your heart is beating fast and hard, bleeding more easily than usual and having breathing trouble. The inflammation of the liver is detected by the blood tests taken and can be reduced by drinking lots and lots of fluids, to flush out the toxins. A patient can detect liver inflammation by nausea, vomiting, reduced appetite and jaundice. It is also possible to obtain rash-like symptoms, similar to those of measles or scarlet fever. They can appear all over the body and are very itchy, much like hives. A cortisone cream applied in small amounts to the small bumps can reduce the itch and swelling. Severe scratching of the bumps can leave scars. Mononucleosis is known to be caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, which can be passed by coughing, sneezing or saliva transfer, where it gets it's popular name, the "kissing disease". Much like chicken pox, most people don't receive mononucleosis a second time in their life, but it can happen. Relapses can occur, but are fairly uncommon. Although you can receive the disease very easily, mononucleosis is not highly contagious, according to the majority of sources. Another infectious disease that is similar to mononucleosis is herpes. Herpes is one of the common of more than 30 different sexually transmitted diseases or STD's in America today. Herpes is an infection that is caused by one of two closely related viruses, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Both of which are very easily caught, have similar symptoms, and can occur on different parts of the body. Even though it is most common to see the virus HSV-1 appear as oral herpes and to see the virus HSV-2 appear as genital herpes. Even though herpes in many cases is easily spread between two individuals, it is definitely possible to prevent the spreading of herpes to others. There are usually early warning signs before a breakout occurs such as tingling, burning, and itching where sores were before. These warning signs may start a few hours or even a day before the sores flare up. At first sight of any warning signs, all sexual contact should be stopped and should avoid sexual contact until all sores and scabs are gone. People who have herpes can use condoms to try and reduce the risk of spreading it to their partners when they are no symptom
