America's new war

Three planes commandeered by unknown, knife wielding hijackers slammed into the Pentagon and New York's landmark World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The twin disaster at the World Trade Center happened shortly before 9am (1300GMT) and then right around 9am. Heavy black smoke billowed into the sky above the gaping holes in the side of the twin towers, one of New York city¯s most famous landmarks, and one of the city¯s busiest work areas. Rescue teams in New York City and at the pentagon continue to look for survivors. Meanwhile, investigators search for those responsible. Hundreds of firefighters and police are missing and feared dead after trying to rescue others.

President Bush, speaking after a day that saw America reel under its worst attack since the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, vowed to stand firm against terrorism and bring the perpetrators to justice. The twin 110 story World Trade Center towers, which drew as many as 40,000 people per day, lay toppled and in ruins. The Pentagon, the nerve center of the nation's military, was severely damaged with flames still burning late into Tuesday night. The News quoted sources as saying at least 800 died when the passenger jet slammed into

I think we all need to be very careful about how we proceed with the matter of cretribution¯ for the terrorist bombings. War is not something civilized people should use just to make they temporarily feel better. It's a last resort. It's been said that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent. We all need to think this over and consider the implications as well as the possible options. Osama bin Laden did not attack us simply because he was angry or because he thought that his little attack, was going to be enough to do us any irreparable harm as a nation. He did this to anger us and to force us, in our rage, to attack and destroy him. He believes that our rage, and our resulting haste to destroy him, will cause us to act impulsively and carelessly in our retribution; and he may be right, from what I'm reading in the Internet postings and opinions of many Americans.

Within 48 hours some 4,000 special agents and 3,000 support personnel were assigned

The Taliban have urged the United States not to attack, saying they are not responsible in any way for Tuesday's assault and that Afghanistan's populace has already suffered greatly through more than a decade of civil war. Bin Laden, too, has denied responsibility through spokesmen, although he has expressed congratulations to the attackers many of who have been pegged by investigators as Arabs and some of who carried passports from Middle Eastern countries. President Bush has been consulting with military and national security advisers regularly since Tuesday's events, but he refused to tip his hand Thursday when pressed by reporters, saying only that the United States planned to act. Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, speaking at the Pentagon, hinted the United States was prepared to mount a campaign of massive proportion to take out terrorist organizations and the states that may be providing them aid and comfort.

the building. Bush, in the first official confirmation of what could be a staggering death toll, urged vigilance as U.S. forces worldwide went on highest alert.
