Beastie Boys
Many bands have become true leaders in their time. In November of 1999, the Beastie Boys came out with a compilation of some of their best music. All the songs ranged from music out of their punk rock days to when they owned a major recording company to the present. The Beastie Boys are influential and cutting edge "scientists of sound" in every aspect, proving so in their unique beats, music, lyrics, and actions. The Beastie Boys' music has always been presented to such an array of audiences and in different styles, allowing them to touch on certain issues not mentioned as often in the music business. "'What makes us significant is that we're a white rap group, and we're performing for this audience that's never seen people like us'-Mike D, 1987" ( Heatley, pg. 45). Their presentation of topic has been the thing that has sold so many records for them. In 1987, when their album Licensed to Ill came out, they were these demoral, rapping, cussing, drinking white kids tearing up the music scene. Many people disliked the Beastie Boys raging at
titude and obscenity. This was such an issue, that they were almost banned in England. Correspondingly, the whole idea that white guys played rap made certain audiences appreciate the views they put forth. "'They came out to our radio show at WBAU, trying to prove to the rap market that they were viable white kids. You really couldnt doubt their legitimacy 'cause they were down with Def Jam and Run D.M.C. and the beats were right. The whole music community was into their "revolution" because they had nothing to complain about. As long as they sounded good and were selling records, the Beasties were turning heads.
