Lord of the Flies
William Golding said that the strength of a society must depend on the ethicalnature and not on any political system in his novel ˇ§Lord of the Fliesˇ¨. He wrote the book to show the political system cannot govern the society without consider the defect of human nature. The following paragraphs show the three major characters in the book led Jack is introduced as an antagonist with an ugly sense of cruelty. At the beginning of the book the position of Jack and Ralph is pretty much the same. They share similar opinions about their situation and its solution. They both want to be rescued. They both realize that there are a lot of things they must do to survive on the island. Jackˇ¦s desire to be Chief was clearly show up in his first appearance. When the idea of having a chief was mentioned Jack spoke out immediately, ˇ§I ought to be chiefˇ¨ (p.21). At first Jack and his hunters do what they are asked to, but as time went on, they soon turn to savage. The freedom offered to him by the island allowed Jack to express the darker sides of his personality. ˇ§The mask was a thing on its own behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousnessˇ¨ (p.69).
