Learning about nature can both positively and negatively affect a person. As an innocent bystander, nature can look calm and peaceful but to a person who interacts with nature it can be a brutal force, which commands respect. Small children are in a sense "innocent." For centuries, authors have portrayed young children as "innocent" and adults as "tainted" individuals because of the knowledge and experience gained with age. When people observe certain wonders of nature without an understanding of how they work, they are in a sense looking at it through a child's eyes, innocent and curious.
