Why Bother with College?
In the essays by Bird and Staples, we learn that many, or atleast quite a few, people believe that college is a waste of everyone's efforts. I, on the other hand, believe that not to be true. In today's world you need to have a decent college education to really get somewhere in our society. Sure, Einstein never past a math class, but that doesn't mean that people that do go to college are just wasting their time and money. In order to get even a decent blue collar job today you will need at least some training in a higher education place or in a vocational/tech. school, but you still have to pay for those. No matter how one looks at it, a higher form of learning is necessary. What if i tell you that you'd even get paid better when you graduate than you would if you never went at all? Bird says, "The premise- which I no longer accept- that college is the best place for all high school graduates grew out of a noble ideal." Yes, when America has no use for high school graduates they tell us to go to college. And it is here where we learn to "make something of ourselves".
