There are many different forms and definition of success. Some people see success as the gaining of fame and prosperity. Others, like Jr. Mendez see success as the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted. Mr. Mendez gained personal success by being self-motivated, goal orientated, and by being able to overcome obstacles in his life.

Growing up as a young man Mr. Mendez had a great desire for self-success. He was extremely self-motivated to be the best out there. Through grade school he thought that it was very important for him to be the leader of his class and to be the highest-ranking officer in any of his school social club activities. At a result of good leadership skills he was chosen many times to represent his school and the city of Corpus Christi in Austin, Texas for Boy State. The road to success is not easy; there are many bumps and turns on that road. Many of these bumps and turns are worse than others. One of the biggest bumps that Mr. Mendez faced was getting ahead without the proper education. Education is currently the key to success and Mr. Mendez lacked this. He stated that he had managed to put a glass ceiling over his head; but yet he has managed to over come this challenge he has faced throughout his career. For example, as a consultant to Phillips Petroleum and Venezuela's oil company (PPUSA) which this company has made multi million dollar decisions that were based on his advise to there project management team. Also on a day-to-day basis he is surrounded by professional engineers and business associates that accept him as an equal. Most of these professionals seek him out for advice and solutions not know his secret of lack of education.
