To Kill a Mocking Bird
Describe the situation in North and South Vietnam from 1954 to 1964. Why was the USA forced to withdraw in the early 1970's?In North and South Vietnam between 1954 and 1964 there was a lot happening. For example Ngo Dinh Diem was selected as Prime Minister for South Vietnam, Diem attempted to get rid of communism in South Vietnam, the NLF was started, Diem was captured and killed, and there was fighting between South and North Vietnam. Firstly, after a controversial election held in South Vietnam, Ngo Dinh Diem emerged as the new Prime Minister of South Vietnam. Diem was a staunch anti-Communist from the south with strong links in America, which suited everyone - except for the communists - as it would stop the spread of Communism through out the pacific. Soon after the election Diem had members of his family promoted to key positions in the government, like Ngo Dinh Nhu his brother who started the Revolutionary Labour Party1. Secondly, From the moment Diem took power, he faced enormous difficulties. Students, intellectuals, Buddhists and others joined the Communists in opposition to Diem's rule. All across South Vietnam suspected communists were caught and either imprisoned or killed. By the end of 1958 there were 4000
These examples demonstrate the many things happening in the short period of time between 1954 and 1964. The United States of America was forced to withdraw from South Vietnam for a number of reasons for example: Too many American soldiers had died fighting for a cause in a far a way country that they had never heard of before. Millions of dollars were being poured into the war and not into local necessities like education. There were also other reason - the troops had been over there for too long and therefore morale was bad, the north Vietnam people were extremely fanatic in their way of thinking toward the war and willing to sacrifice their own lives. Firstly, over 56000 American's lost their lives during the war and during 1969 the troop level went up to 549000 troops who were serving Vietnam, which created a shortage of men back home in some areas. The people put more pressure on the government to end the war and there were numerous protests across America, one resulting in the death of 4 American students who were shot down by riot police. Many of the soldiers that died had never even heard of Vietnam before the war actually started7. Fourthly, there were protests throughout South Vietnam, it soon became clear that Diem did not have support of the people, even the Kennedy administration supported a general coup. In 1963 some of Diem's own generals in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam approached the American embassy in Saigon with plans to overthrow Diem. Washington approved this and on November 1st 1963, Diem and his Brother were captured and later assassinated. Three weeks later, President Kennedy was murdered on the streets of Dallas4.
