Asthma is the leading cause of student absentee in America. Asthma is a respiratory disease. It can be found in adults, but children are at a much higher risk of contracting this disease some of the symptoms are breathlessness and a tightening in the chest. It can be chronic, which means you live with this everyday or just temporary. Either form can be life threatening to you. An asthma attack is when your lungs have a reaction with some sort of substance, or an activity you do. It causes your lungs to make you feel breathless and have a painful tight feeling in your chest. You may sometimes get a hacking cough, which is caused by a substance that is called phlegm. Phlegm goes into the lungs and causes a more intense cough. The tubes in your lungs called the bronchial tubes begin to partially block. This is a result of the swelling of the mucus membranes that line these muscles. This and the Phlegm result in the narrowing of the air passages. In the most severe cases this narrowing of the airways can become permanent over time. The type of asthma and how severe it is determines the severity your asthma attacks.
