From business to book to movie to natureFor John Krakauer, Mt. Everest had always been something he looked up to, "secretly, I dreamed of ascending Everest myself one day; for more than a decade it remained a burning ambition" (Krakauer 23). He had climbed many mountains before, but climbing Everest was the greatest challenge left for him to accomplish. It was a mountain feared by many but conquered by few, and Krakauer wanted to be among those few. As a writer for Outside magazine Krakauer received a call one day and given a proposal, "...to join a guided Everest expedition and write an article about the mushrooming commercialization of the mountain and the attendant controversies" (Krakauer 28). Krakauer was now given the opportunity to climb Everest and in return all he had to do was write an article. His journey would start out as a business trip but would very quickly evolve into a personal goal
While on his journey ascending Everest, Krakauer kept accurate notes about the climb, telling everything that happened and capturing the emotional aspects as well. Soon after his trip from Everest, Krakauer would write an award-winning novel, Into Thin Air, telling the tragedies and triumphs of climbing Everest. Krakauer's novel would allow readers to picture the hardships and struggles that came along with climbing, but the true test came when a movie was made based on the book. The movie, being a product of Hollywood, would contain all the aspects the novel did with a few added things for entertainment. The movie may have been criticized for it's portrayal of the journey as being only a week long, where as the novel described it as taking many weeks, but the movie did present a strong emotional accomplishment.
