While there are many advantages, there are many more disadvantages to being on welfare. The first disadvantage that I believe to be the worst, is not having any money. Even if they are receiving money in checks, or they are working, they are unable to enjoy any luxuries for themselves, especially if they have children. They do live in homes, which usually are not located in the best of neighborhoods, which may or may not be provided by welfare, but in fact are tiny run down houses or apartments which they are not able to fix up because they don't have enough money. Another disadvantage is that most of the individuals are unable to own or a buy a car, which then they have to turn to public transportation that can be more then they can afford. Getting food stamps is not all what its hyped up to be. They barley get enough to live off of during the week and that hurts themselves because they cannot eat when they are hungry or if they have a mood where they want some type of junk food. When they do work, they often are not able to get a promotion or a raise, the companies would prefer to give that benefit to other employees. The children suffer also, they are poverty stricken and live and go to schools where they usually are not the best of schools. If the parents could get a job then they themselves as well as their children would not have to suffer, and in some cases they suffer horribly.

Some welfare cases where the recipients refuse to work may have no incentive to work, and therefore, most people outside of welfare will comment on how much they believe individuals on welfare are lazy. This is most defiantly true in some cases, but people on welfare voted to have workfare added in to the welfare program. It is proven that it's hard to be hired for a large company, but what most of the population doesn't understand is, is what about working temporary for a Mcjob. There are plenty of fast food restaurants, stores, gas stations, and other small jobs that they would be capable of doing, but most individuals don't want a job that's considered a teenagers type of work. Because most individuals need more education and training, companies will not hire for much more than minimum wage, which again leads into that welfare recipients should start at a Mcjob.

This welfare system, where individuals could earn free money, provided no incentive to work, or to work more then they already did. The households that received welfare benefits lost $1.00 in welfare money to each additional dollar earned individually. Therefore, most people chose not to work, because welfare would give the amount of money needed to live on (Is Workfare Working, 1).

In 1981, more changes were made to the system, which included the idea of Workfare. Workfare requires people to work in exchange for their welfare benefits. If they did not work, there was not a check from welfare in the mail. If one chose not to work, they had to do some type of training, such as studying for higher education which is also called Learn Fair, or actual training for a job (Is Workfare Working, 2). The types of jobs most people on the workfare program were jobs such as cleaning streets, cleaning parks, cleaning hospitals, or any such work. If they fail to either work or participate in an activity, they are taken out of the system and will not receive any benifits (Slave Labor, 2).

When a welfare recipient with children leave for work and or go to their Learn Fair, they usually have trouble finding a babysitter for their child or children. Day care is much too much expensive and cannot afford it. Some may have a family member or a neighbor baby-sit for them, but in most cases especially young teenage mothers who are abandoned by their families don't have the option for a
