Read this statement, and think about it for a while, what does it tell you? As you read on I will try to explain to you why the food distribution throughout the world is not equal and how it increase hunger throughout the world. There are countries that are making more food than the people consume, this mainly happens in the core countries. There are other countries that are making food that are way below than what an average person consumes, this mainly happens in the poor countries. This problem involves everybody in the world, not just the poverty and hunger stricken people. On the next page a map is attached that shows the food supply gap between the poor and the rich countries. It was released by the FAO, the data is based on the years 1994-1996. The also give daily energy supply (DES) numbers for 177 nations and seven socio-economic group of countries. Take a close look at it and see where all the poor hunger stricken countries are located. Find where you live and look at your DES and compare it to the poor countries DES.

Us humans waste a lot of food, without thinking about it. A lot of people do not think much of quantity when they prepare their food. They will prepare a too much and end up throwing it away. We throw away a lot of food without thinking about it. When a person goes to restaurant they order a big portion of food and they don't finish it and they end up throwing it away, instead of having it bagged up to take along. There are plenty of other ways we waste food, for instance, a farmer grow too much food that he can't sell or eat, he throws it away that was just a couple of families meals. Another way we waste food that we are always thinking of quality. Have you ever you bought something to eat, only to find that you don't like it and end up throwing it away? Well guess what, you could have used that money to buy a hungry family's meal in a poor country, and you have just contributed to the food distribution problem. If every single person were to give a portion of their food that they do not need, there will be more than enough to feed every living human being on Earth.

The world's diet is composed basically of three food systems; grain meat and fish. Grain (wheat, corn, rice, etc.) when directly consumed supply about 70 percent of human food energy. Since grain is one of the main sources of food and not as easily perishable as fruit and vegetables, scientists have been trying to improve the harvests of grain genetically. For a lot of people grain is the main staple that gets them by, especially in Asia where a lot of rice and wheat is consumed. During the 1940's all the way through to the mid-1980's, the Green Revolution happened.

The growth of the world's population is one cause of the food problem. There is no food shortage presently, but it is just that some countries can't make enough food to support their people and other countries make too much food resulting in a surplus. Some nations give this surplus out as humanitarian aid to other countries. America has a surplus so large that it makes enough food to feed the whole world alone, but doesn't give out its entire surplus. America prefers to use food as a negotiation tool; it has done it before in Russia. Farmers would rather throw away most of their surplus, if they harvested too much food, rather than give it to the needy people who need it, which makes no sense. Statistics show that more food than ever is being produced, especially with technology. Look at the chart, the population was 2.2 billion less people in 1960, and there was still famine. In countries like Somalia the birth rates are high, yet the death rates make up for the birth rate being so high. According to Stutz and Souza of "The World Economy" page 113, "Thanks to scientific advances in farming, world food production has been increasing faster than population. Despite these advances, which averted large-scale starvation in the 1970s and 1980s, millions of still go hungry daily." This statement tells us that the food production is increasing faster than the population, but for some reason people all around the world are still going hungry.
