A Clockwork Orange

Imagine yourself in a world where violence, rape, and drugs are common. Imagine a teenager with enough power to do whatever he or she wishes. This world is the future of tomorrow. A Clockwork Orange has gained much attention since it was published in 1962 by Anthony Burgess. Its theme and disturbing nature have given critics different opinions and comments ranging from "a work or art," to "a garbage heap." Aside from the theme, the characters ( mainly Alex ) have been a basis for other novels and an inspiration to young writers. Throughout the novel, Alex goes through a series of changes from how he has treated others,

how other characters have treated Alex, and what Alex finally wants in life. Alex's change is what every person goes through in their life.

Alex has changed by how he has treated others in many different ways. Alex would

constantly beat and torture other humans and rape young women. He has caused much grief to his parents "We shall have the police here, oh oh oh. Oh, you bad and wicked boy, disgracing us all like this." (Burgess, Pg. 106) and his punishment was that he wasn't allowed back into their home. Other people that

he had tortured would include, "the drunk man" (Pg. 14-15), and most important, "the cat lady." (Pg. 47-53) Although Alex's crimes are much more severe than the average person, no one is innocent of treating everyone with respect. No one cares or likes everyone and therefore, Alex and his crimes are like our own emotions toward each other.

Every person goes through changes and periods in their life, like Alex experienced in A Clockwork Orange. By understanding how you treat people and how other people treat you, it can help you focus on what your goals are in life. A Clockwork Orange isn't about adolescence, abuse, violence or even drugs. It's underlining theme shows a detailed illustration on human nature itself. It's about how ordinary people think, only not everyone acts like Alex does. It could be because Alex is a teenager and still has much to learn, but since this novel is set in the not-to-distant future, Anthony Burgess could be describing human nature in the future. If Mr. Burgess was describing the future, then his description of human nature is not far off after all. With

murders and violence becoming a regular occurrence in our day
