Edgar Allen Poe

Thesis: Science Fiction: Poe's "A Descent into the Maelstrom" and " MS found in a Bottle"

"It may appear strange, but now, when we were in the very jaws of the gulf, I felt more composed than when we were only approaching it. Having made up my mind to hope no more, I got rid of a great deal of that terror which unmanned me at first. I suppose it was despair that strung my nerves."

The major distinction between fantasy and science fiction is, simply, that science fiction uses one, or a very, very few assume, and develops the rigidly consistent logical consequences of these limited suggest. Fantasy makes its rules as it goes along...The basic nature of fantasy is "The only rule is, make up a new rule any time you need one!" The basic rule of science fiction is "set up a basic proposition--then develop its consistent, reasonable consequences." Poe is one of the great writers that have a very high imagination. Science Fiction usually deals with great phenomenon's, like aliens and spacecrafts, but Poe decides to take another route. Poe's fiction is usually about natures, storms, hurricanes and such. He takes great care to let readers know what is going on, the way the characters act, what they see, and mostly what the surrou

Poe's tales of horror often had many similarities but they frequently had many differences. For example, in "A Descent into the Maelstrom," he uses an old man as a "guide" through where he and his family has descended into the very middle of the Maelstrom. But in "Ms found in a Bottle," he is the narrator and the characters are just that, characters. And in "Ms found in a Bottle," Poe

In "MS in a Bottle," Poe also uses many different techniques to help the reader understand the plot. In the story, Poe says "As I look around me I feel ashamed of my former apprehensions. If I trembled at the blast, which as hitherto attended us, shall I not stand aghast at a warring of wind and ocean." This quote states that even though they are on the water the narrator still understands full what each is going through. Poe also uses many different literary elements to explain what he is saying. He foreshadows some when he says "I observed a very singular, isolated cloud, to the northwest. It was remarkable, as well for its color, as from its being the first we had seen since our departure." Poe also uses personification when describing the ship that they are one. He says Our vessel was a beautiful ship of about four hundred tons, copper-fasted, and built at Bombay of Malabar teak. She was freighted with cotton-wool and oil."

embellished more he explains more of the surroundings after the ship sunk. He tells more about the sunshine when the two sole survivors on the ship are still
