For thousands of years, mankind has searched for the true meaning of freedom. There are people all over the world believing that America symbolizes freedom. For the people who live in America, they believe that they have freedom. America is a free country; you have the freedom of speech and freedom to do things as one pleases. But is the freedom that we have the true freedom? Gerry Spence who is one of the American’s most outspoken and successful trial lawyers, says that, “We are not free. Nor have we ever been.” We as humans, we are afraid and worried about many things. We are afraid of death, loneliness, and rejections. Since we have so many things to be afraid and worry about, we don’t really have freedom. To me, freedom is not to be afraid or worried about something. In other words, when I have no burden, then I am free. It is just like what Gerry Spence said, “A state of perfect freedom is a state of nothingness.” NO matter how free we believe we are, there is always an invisible chain that fetters us.
