The latest trends in television are reality-based television shows, known as reality TV. The programs put everyday people in supposed real life situations and then tape their actions as they happen. Overall, television is being taken over by these shows. Such shows include The Mole, Weakest Link, Survivor, The Real World, Road Rules, Temptation Island, and Who Want To Marry a Multimillionaire. Despite the popularity of reality TV these shows are anything but real, and should be renamed to reflect their real appeal, sensationalism. Take MTV's The Real World for example. Ten years ago, MTV recognized that there was a whole new genre of programming and launched an extremely successful reality television show. The producers of this show chose seven people to live in a house and have their personal lives taped for six months. MTV picked the seven individuals by asking the candidates questions concerning their sexuality, morals, political standpoint, and religion. The Real World presumed to be the true stories of seven people living together. However, many of the situations are fabricated and then edited together to make a moment seem risque or full of chaos. Real or not, these conflicts are precise reasons why the show is so popular. Television viewers thrive on watching pandemonium and commotion. This is demonstrated by the fact that The Real World is still airing and takes in huge advertising dollars for MTV. The show Survivor is another staged moneymaking program. The first Survivor was incredibly popular for the same reasons as The Real World; scheming, forming alliances and hate speeches are the meat and potatoes of this show. Survivor is so popular it lured 52 million viewers on August 23, 2000. (Levin). The nation watched Survivor's 16 individuals stranded on an island as the cast members were systematically voted off until one member remained, winning one million dollars.
