The Great Depression

A detailed Summary of The Great Depression

The Great Depression started on October 1929 with the end of the war and continued through the 1930's. The Great Depression happened as a result of the devastating aftermath of the World War (World War 1). Socially, Politically, and Economically there were huge changes during this time, particularly to the working class. During this period several extreme political parties were formed. However unlike Europe they were unable to take hold.

Human suffering became a reality for millions of Australians as the depression continued. Many died of disease resulting from malnutrition. Thousands lost their homes because they could not pay the mortgage, they then wandered the streets looking for food, shelter, clothing and more importantly jobs. Many people who lost their homes remained in their immediate community. Some crowded into the homes of relatives, others moved to a shabby section of town and built shacks from flattened tin cans and old crates. The ragged travelers found clothing harder to obtain than food. Missions gave most of the clothing they had to needy local people first. Some of the travelers became ill because they did not have proper food and clothing, but the Hospitals helped the local people first.

Once the depression had started different political parties came to Australia with their own strategies and ideas to convince the Australian public to hand over control so they could enforce their suggestions to end the depression in Australia. Some suggestions put forward would have made the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. Others would have helped the poor to get jobs enabling them to buy food, water and a home. This would have resulted in inflation, which was an idea of the Labor Party or the left wing. The other suggestion was deflation were the country would continue to pay off overseas loans and tax rates would be raised, this suggestion was put forward by the Liberal, Right wing.

On the other hand, Fascism, the enemy of Communism, was lead by a single strong leader known as a Dictator who makes all the choices without discussing it with the other members. They bring order and militancy to the nation. They crush all opposition, certain groups are excluded which may depend on race and if they are pure. They also think that the national race is more Superior and deserve the best of everything. The Great Depression, and the failure of democratic governments to tackle the consequent economic hardship and mass unemployment, fuelled fascist movements worldwide.
