A detailed Summary of biodiversity


In my mind I was not sure what to expect. I knew that I was going to the Northbranch Restoration Project to aid in the effort and to get a better understanding of the book I had just read, Miracle Under the Oaks. The project was setup by an ecologist Steve Packard and my class had just read about his ventures in the book. During my time I helped to extract seeds from plants. From what I understood the seeds were going to be used to bring back species of plants to other sites in the area. Even though the task in itself was not of great significance I had a feeling that I had given my time to help the environment.

In class we discussed about how people perceive nature and the environments in which they live. Many people including myself agreed that society takes the environment we live in for granted. This came to my mind as I worked in the field. The numbers of volunteers were in such few numbers that it disheartened me


to think that society is so uncaring. Members of our society can go into outer space to look for new places to live but cannot take care of their own homes. The even more disheartening thought that came to my mind is that the United States creates high standards for living but cannot undertake responsibilities such as taking care of the environment.

In the book, Stevens talked about how the prairie changed from a garbage dump to a lively ecosystem with hundreds of different species of plants. In the field I was confronted with hundreds of species of different plants such as big bluestems and Indian grass just like he talked about in the book. The volunteers there told me all about the different species of plants. I felt kind of in awe that all of these natural beauties could have been used at one time for disposable.

In contrast to these negative thoughts I had a very uplifting experience in the field. At first
