Of Mice and Men

In the early 1900s, many men traveled alone searching for jobs. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie and George are exceptions. They travel in search of work together. Most of these people have no dreams for the future, live only for the present, and have no one to care about. But Lennie and George are different. They have a special relationship and have important roles in each other’s lives.

Lennie and George’s lives are better because they are together. They routinely state, “Guys like us are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong to no place . . . but not us! An’ why? Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you.” This statement shows that if not for each other, they would be very lonely and that they are happy and grateful to be together.
