A detailed Summary of Of Mice and Men


In the early 1900s, many men traveled alone searching for jobs. In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie and George are exceptions. They travel in search of work together. Most of these people have no dreams for the future, live only for the present, and have no one to care about. But Lennie and George are different. They have a special relationship and have important roles in each other's lives.

Lennie and George's lives are better because they are together. They routinely state, "Guys like us are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don't belong to no place . . . but not us! An' why? Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you." This statement shows that if not for each other, they would be very lonely and that they are happy and grateful to be together. George Says, "I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebody'd shoot yo


Lennie and George are like family since neither of them has any family of their own left. If apart, both Lennie and George would have no one to turn to for help. This causes their bond to be stronger. When Lennie and George are talking to the boss, George tells Lennie to shut up so he won't say something stupid. He does this in a way a brother would do to a meddlesome younger sibling. Lennie immediately obeys George in a way a little brother would obey his older brother.

Lennie and George have complementing personalities. George tells their boss, "He ain't bright but he can put up a 400 pound bale." Lennie is big and strong, but is not very smart, while George has an average build and is thought of by Slim as intelligent.
