Brave New World
The society in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World is primarily based upon consumption. Anything and everything that does not involve consumption is immediately deemed unorthodox. People, who do not consume, are detrimental towards the brave new world. Consumption is not only relevant; consumption is life in Brave New World. Events, such as solitude, that are not based on consumption have already been eliminated in Brave New World. Aspects of life, such as the love of nature, that are beneficial to people, who live in the twentieth or twenty-first century and do not cost money, could not be allowed in Brave New World. Everyone must consume, or they must produce the need for consumption. In an effort to increase transport consumption, citizens were conditioned to like nature. However, this ingenuity backfired when Epsilons went to the country and did not consume anything. As explained by the D.H.C. “we condition them to love all country sports. At the same time, we see to it that all country sports shall entail the use of elaborate apparatus. So that they consume manufactured articles as well as transport”
